Sublime food, superior wines – a match made in heaven!

Simon Smith, winemaker to the Louisvale Wine Estate for the past 14 years provided a light hearted and fun-filled evening last week at The Lighthouse Restaurant with a superb wine pairing  - our final event for 2011! The boutique vineyard and winery of Louisvale is situated in the picturesque Devon Valley just outside Stellenbosch and its reputation for quality is built on its Chardonnay. No fewer than 11 successive vintages have been selected for the annual Nederburg Auction – an unsurpassed record for Chardonnay and proof of their wine’s superior status.

Over the past 20 years, its wines have garnered a host of awards and accolades. Today, Louisvale wines are enjoyed on four continents and Simon, whose passion for the vine and his wines is evident in the fruits of his labour, personally guided our diners through a tasting of the Louisvale Unwooded Chardonnay – beautifully paired with a spicy Thai chicken and sweetcorn soup, followed by the delicate Louisvale Sauvignon Blanc which complimented the Cannelloni stuffed with potatoes, garden peas and smoked salmon trout.

Star of the show was the Louisvale Chardonnay (previous winner of 41/2 stars in the 2010 Wine Magazine) which was paired with a delicious poached Kabeljou dish which highlighted the sublime perfection of Mossel Bay’s freshly caught linefish. Rounding off the successful evening was a lovely Louisvale Merlot which enhanced the dish of braised chicken served with pearl onions, button mushrooms and roasted garlic and dessert was a delicious hazelnut and white chocolate Semi-fredo served with grappa infused strawberries to end the evening.
